Battrick » Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Information

As well as the Sledging conference Battrick offers another way of interacting with other users - Internet Relay Chat (IRC).

IRC was one of the first aspects of the Internet to be developed and while it may not be the most visually attractive experience compared to the many Instant Messengers and Chat Rooms you will find around the net, it makes up for this with efficiency, simplicity and size.
There are hundreds of servers will thousands of channels on offer on every topic imaginable and Battrick is included in that.

If you are a seasoned IRC user then you can jump right in to one of the channels by going to Rules and Channels List but if you are new to this aspect of the net then we have provided a brief guide to help you get started

Getting Started

IRC is completely free to use but you do need to download a client. Probably the most commonly used, and the one we recommend for using to get start on IRC, is mIRC. However once you feel more adept there are a massive number of clients to choose from.

Once you have downloaded and installed mIRC open it and click the icon below "File" which appears to have two lightning bolts on it. This is the connect button, but as you haven't yet entered a username, a window will pop up asking you to do so. Please be aware when entering your real name that anybody can see it using a simple command called "whois", so if you would rather remain anonymous leave it blank.

After you have entered your names click "Servers" in the left hand side. Once on that page go to the "IRC Network" drop down box, select "netgamers" and then click ok.

Now click the Connect button again and you should see a flurry of text appear in the main window as you connect to the Netgamers server; do not close this window or you will be disconnected! Once that has stopped you then need to type "/join #battrick" in the text entry bar underneath the main window.

Another window should now pop up showing the official Battrick channel. Congratulations on making a start on IRC! :o)

Official Channels

The official Battrick channels can be found on the netgamers server.

This is the main official channel where you are free to mingle and chat to other users as you see fit. As this is the official Channels we do have to maintain an element of order and so the following rules apply:

  • Do not use it to report cheating — contact the GMs instead
  • Do not use it to report bugs — use the bugs sledging board instead
  • No spam, i.e. multiple posting of the same message
  • No racist or personal attacks, attacks on a specific nation or religion
  • Keep political and religious discussions to a minimum. There are other channels available for this
  • Keep swearing or use of profane language to an absolute minimum
  • Do not ask for help with illegal software (piracy) or CD-keys to such games or software
  • Do not promote criminal activities or use of illegal goods or substances, i.e. drugs
  • Do not discuss decisions taken by GMs and/or moderators.
  • Do not excessively use CAPITAL letters; it is considered shouting and is not tolerated
  • Do not harass members of the BT Team - you may ask questions but if they decline to answer please respect this
  • Do not request to be given voice or made an op unless absolutely necessary; it will only be given to those who need it.

Although we will moderate the channel in line with the above rules this is no substitute for parental supervision of minors' use of this facility.

There are currently six channel ops (operators) for this channel. Please show them the appropriate degree of respect, including those not members of the BT Team. They are:

  • BT-Jargon
  • GM-rascal-the-cat
  • MOD-Davis88
  • Aer
  • Brylarke
  • karl_w_w

Important: By joining the channel you are agreeing to the above rules. Failure to comply with these rules may result in both IRC and in-game penalties.

This channel is designated for occasional special events we will be holding including Question and Answer (Q & A) Sessions with the BT-Team. The channel is permanently switched on for moderation (i.e. voice "+" is required to speak) and is not for idling. All the rules for #battrick apply here too.

Q & A Sessions

Q & A sessions will be announced on the Battrick News page around two weeks before they occur. We will try and hold them at times appropriate for as wide a geographical spread of our userbase as possible.

At the session, once requested to do so, users may personnel message (PM - double click on the users name) the designated Ops as instructed. In busy sessions this will be organised by the first initial of your BT username, with users with names beginning A-J PMing one Op, and K-Z another.

We will then select as many of the better questions as we can, voicing the user who submitted the question so they can reply to the BT-Teams response as appropriate. Obviously please be polite when replying.

For those unable to attend these sessions a chat log (a record of all that was said) will be made available below a few days after the session. Previous chat logs are also available.

User / Unofficial Channels

Please note: Battrick is not responsible for the moderation of these channels. These channels have been user created and are listed here due to their appeal to certain user groups.

Please contact the GMs if you have a channel which you wish to add.
